This definitely calls for a non-Trump vodka martini.

  2. Paul Hooson says:

Wow! I actually improved on my usual honorable mention status here with this great third place showing. Thank you!

As a serious aside, while I understand the serious concerns of some with this week’s photo of a woman in severe emotional pain, which led to a discussion by some, I really believe the spirit of humor and comedy, and to give readers a source of comic relief should be respected by the readers. Over at Wizbang I told some jokes about that outlandish school bus driver who caused that terrible accident, and drew some sharp rebukes there. I really believe that part of the healing process, even with tragedy, is to find some humor, even if it seems too soon or not appropriate. Being able to take an emotional break from intense sadness is an important coping mechanism in my view. Even the worse of shock humor sometimes is an important coping tool. God bless Rodney for what he tries to achieve here each week, a break from the serious, where the joke writers get an opportunity to add their thoughts that are their own, and may give others a good laugh in the process. I personally know that nothing gives me more of an emotional lift than when someone tells me they laughed so hard they just spit out their coffee all over their computer keyboard and their wife wanted to know what was so funny…

Although I understand that some people felt that this photo was taken during a particularly vulnerable moment for Clinton, that wasn’t my reaction. In the first place, I doubt she or her advisors would have permitted any kind of photo to be taken during a moment when she was distraught.

I took it as a photo of someone who’d either just tasted or smelled something unusually foul, or heard a really bad joke, or maybe was reacting to something she’d heard that was stupid/gross/unfunny/tasteless.

@Paul Hooson: I would disagree. I think that it is highly inappropriate for strangers–aspiring stand-up comics though they may be–to intrude on the grief of others so as to aid “in the healing process” by turning their tragedy into a practice joke writing exercise.

Having said that. You joke was one of the few clever and funny ones this past week. And I say that as the person in the audience who turns to his friend and asks “when is he going to start telling jokes.” Congratulations.

  9. Guarneri says:

Anyone who read the captions knew this was a Hillary, ” feel your pain”, photo op. Reynolds needs to find a better avenue for his ongoing anger.

Anyway, for what it’s worth, I thought Dougs was pretty good. Thought it might win.
