Mike Pence Not Offended By Statement By Hamilton Cast

Hamilton Cast Mike Pence

Vice-President-Elect Pence doesn’t seem nearly as offended as Donald Trump by Friday’s comments from the stage by the cast of Hamilton:

Following Vice President-Elect Mike Pence’s trip to Hamilton November 18, he sat down with Chris Wallace on Fox News Sunday and said that he “really enjoyed” the show.

At the end of Pence’s interview on Fox News Sunday, Wallace asked him about “the subject everybody is talking about.” Wallace referenced President-Elect Donald Trump’s Twitter response to the curtain speech and asked Pence if he thought it was “rude.”

“Well, first off, my daughter and I, and her cousins really enjoyed the show Hamilton,” Pence replied. “It’s just an incredible production and incredibly talented people. It was a real joy to be there. When we arrived, we heard a few boos, and we heard some cheers, and I nudged my kids and reminded them: That’s what freedom sounds like. But at the end, I did hear what was said from the stage, and I can tell you, I wasn’t offended by what was said. I’ll leave to others whether that was the appropriate venue to say it. But, I do want to say that the basic element is the center of that message is one that I want to address, and that is I know this is a very disappointing time for people that did not see their candidate win in this national election… And, I just want to reassure people that what President-Elect Donald Trump said on election night, he absolutely meant from the bottom of his heart. He is preparing to be the President of all of the people of the United States of America, and to watch him bringing together people of diverse views, bringing together people that differed with him strongly, seeing him talk to leaders around the world, I just want to reassure every American that in the days ahead, I am very confident that they are going to see President-Elect Donald Trump be a President for all of the people, and we embrace that principle, and we are going to work hard to make that principle every day that we serve.”

As for an apology from the Hamilton cast and creative team, Pence said, “As I said, I would leave that to others whether that was the appropriate venue for that, but I will tell you, Chris, if you haven’t seen the show, go to see it. It is a great, great show, and I’m a real history buff, so my daughter, and I, and her cousins really enjoyed it.”

Trump meanwhile continues to Tweet about the incident:

Clearly, Pence is more mature than President-Elect Trump. Of course, your average two-year old is more mature than President-Elect Trump.

I’m not sure its maturity (though that clearly is a difference) as much as it is the contrast between a conventional, albeit theocratic, experienced politician and a media figure who has never answered to anyone for anything.

Do Pence and Trump talk to each other? Looking at this blip on the radar type of issue, you would think they would have discussed a collective response, or discussed it together in general. Does not seem to be the case. Pence gives a good response, yet has that darn kid behind him that will not shut up…Trump is like that hyper kid that parents give their phone to in order to calm them down…only difference is this kid is on twitter lol.

    @Jc:

I don’t think it’s possible to muzzle Trump. No one ever has before, except possibly for a brief period before the election.

It will be interesting to see his 3 a.m. Tweets when he’s president. Alarming, but interesting.

This whole “incident” is just the latest example of the political and media dysfunction in this country which focuses on trivial controversies instead of substance. I can’t figure out why anyone should care about this one way or the other except as a kind of delusional partisan shadowboxing.

OTB has three posts on this inanity…so far. I decided to check and, in contrast, there are only two OTB posts on Syria, two on Afghanistan and one on Iraq so far in all of 2016. I realize this isn’t a foreign policy wonk blog (it kind of used to be), but come on.

The Vice President apparently does not read FoxNews. Apparently he was publicly humiliated and harassed by the cast!

Jeesh, maybe Pence needs to reassess just how horrible his experience was, actually being there is just too detached from what really happened!

I’m convinced that Trump is just giving the media a “squirrel” to distract them from his settlement in the Trump U lawsuit. I imagine next year Trump will still be bragging about how he never settles and the media will gladly report it as fact…

@Matt: the funny thing is he apparently had a meeting with all the network execs and anchors and proceeded to berate and rip into them and call them all liars….the same media that basically covered him 24-7 And peddled his BS and rarely challenged his lies

Pence is showing class here. I understand why that would be foreign to much of the commentariat around these parts.

@Jenos The Deplorable: So the bar for “showing class” is to not lash out at people who politely address you?

    Wow that’s really low……

Of course this is when you claim OMG THEY WERE INSULTING ATTACKING AND ASSAULTING PENCE!!!!…

    Reality rarely is your thing.
